Abstract

During the Egyptian Predynastic Period (ca. 5300–3000 BCE), many cultures arose in both Upper and Lower Egypt. The period saw the increase in a sedentary lifestyle, trade with outside cultures, and craft specialization. The end of the Predynastic Period was marked by the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt. The Early Dynastic Period (ca. 3000–2686 BCE), also known as the Archaic Period, began after unification. During this time, what would become classic ancient Egyptian society began to form. The characteristics of this society included a centralized government, the establishment of state administration, and the development of a writing system.
