Abstract

As the medieval church in Europe grew in economic and political power, concerns arose over various forms of corrupt behavior. Much of the controversy surrounding the church in the Middle Ages revolved around the relationship between church and state. In 800 CE, when Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne as Holy Roman Emperor, the rulers of Europe and the leaders of the church found their roles more intertwined than ever before
