Abstract

In our present understanding, the Sumerians were the first known people to occupy southern Iraq (Mesopotamia). The first evidence of urbanization, large public buildings, and writing is attributed to them. In fact, the first evidence of significant occupation in southern Mesopotamia was during the Ubaid period (ca. 5500–4000 BCE). A unified material culture in terms of pottery, architecture, and burials has been found originating in this region and spreading north into northern Iraq, Syria, and southeastern Turkey.
