Abstract

Roman Republic: the roots of the word republic are res (“things”) and publica (“public”), so “republic” means “public things” or “a public affair”; it is not the private affair of a king. Thus citizenship took on central importance in a government of elected officials (such as consuls, praetors, questors, and censors) based on the division of powers and checks and balances. The ideals of republican Rome have been immensely influential ever since, even among Romans themselves after the republic passed into the empire.
