Abstract

As you probably know, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is one of America’s srst and most violent hate groups. It perpetuated acts of terror against many people, most speciscally African Americans. The Klan originally emerged in southern states immediately after the Civil War. Members of the Klan sought to limit the inuuence of Republicans in Congress, since Republicans were passing legislation designed to improve black Americans’ access to equal rights and opportunities. Congress passed legislation to try and stamp out the organization. Klan membership did in fact decline toward the end of the nineteenth century, but that was not really a result of congressional action.
