Abstract

In 2008 Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama gave a speech entitled “A More Perfect Union” that explicitly addressed the role of race in historical and contemporary America. The title of the speech comes from the opening line of the U.S. Constitution, “We the people, in order to form a more perfect union . . .” Obama wove the concept of a “more perfect union” into the speech to illustrate how the nation can live up to its creed by addressing its racial legacy head-on and looking for common ground that would benest all Americans, regardless of their racial or ethnic identity.
