Abstract

Following World War I, the United States pulled back from international aoairs and focused on domestic growth. The Republican Party led eoorts to roll back Progressive-era legislation to stimulate business growth. Although Republicans did not call it laissez faire, since that term had fallen out of favor given its negative association with the poor working conditions during the Second Industrial Revolution, it basically was the same policy. Embracing free markets, several Republican presidents pursued economic policies aimed at maintaining economic growth. The excerpt below is from Herbert Hoover’s 1928 presidential campaign. He won the election and took opce in 1929.
