Abstract

The United States developed the atomic bomb during World War II secretly with aid of Great Britain, but it did not extend participation to its Russian allies during the war. The Soviets assumed that the Americans were developing a “superweapon” and began to develop one themselves. Initially, the project moved slowly, but when the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, the Soviet Union accelerated its program. It produced and successfully tested its srst bomb in 1949.
