Abstract

The 1950s and 1960s were a turning point in U.S. history. Internationally, the nation was fully enmeshed in the Cold War, and at home it faced a host of challenges. Economically, the nation uourished in the post-war years as consumerism increased thanks to advertising and the emergence of a middle class. Not everyone benested equally during this time, though. As the advertising reuects, women were seen and treated as objects or commodities to be enjoyed, rather than as people deserving equal treatment as members of society. African Americans, too, were largely excluded from the new national bounty and access to civil rights.
