Abstract

George Herbert Walker Bush had a long and prestigious career in public service. He served in World War II, became a U.S. Congressman for the state of Texas, worked as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, was an envoy to China, and directed the CIA. Bush ran against Ronald Reagan in the Republican Party primary for the 1980 election and lost. He served as Reagan’s vice president for the full eight years, and then ran for president in the 1988 election. The following text is from Bush’s speech at the Republican Presidential Convention. Bush won the election in 1988 but then lost to Bill Clinton in 1992.
