Abstract

Many people in America, including those in the counterculture movements and the broader public, took an unprecedented interest in the environment in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Chemical compounds moved into the mainstream market after World War II. Companies that had developed toxic chemicals for the war eoort began looking for commercial uses of these products, especially in agriculture. Government regulation was quite limited during this era, because there were very few research studies that speciscally examined the health impacts of exposure to these chemicals. DDT was one of these wartime chemicals that moved into the mainstream in the 1950s.
