Abstract

The last unit focused on changes occurring throughout America, especially around the Black civil rights struggle. African Americans made significant gains, but they continued to face challenges, particularly in northern and urban areas where segregation and discrimination were pervasive and not easily eradicated by new legislation. The Civil Rights Act of 1964, however, proved incredibly helpful to women of all backgrounds, especially white women, since it banned discrimination on the basis of “sex,” in addition to race, religion, color, national origin. As a result, women and other minority groups that witnessed African Americans’ successes sought to replicate them in their own lives.
