Abstract

W.E.B. Du Bois was one of the greatest intellectuals of the early twentieth century and one of the most prominent African American activists. He was born to a free family in Massachusetts, and while he had experienced discrimination growing up, it was not until he moved to Tennessee to attend Fisk University that he was fully confronted with Jim Crow segregation. This experience caused him to deeply question black people’s lives and opportunities in America. Grappling with these issues on an intellectual level, Du Bois went on to become the srst African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University and afterwards became a college professor.
