Abstract
At the beginning of this unit, we asked you to consider the following questions: 1. How would you characterize American identity historically? How would you describe American identity today? Draw a twocolumn comparison chart, listing historical American identity traits in one category and modern traits in another. How are the lists similar and dioerent? 2. How did the nation’s physical expansion intensify questions about American identity and citizenship? Before you answer this question, draw a simple map of today’s United States. Then mark areas that you know were inhabited by many people that were not always considered “real” Americans in the past. Add notes to this map as you read these documents and learn more about these groups. 3. How can an individual or a nation’s economic status aoect their ability to access full rights or fair treatment by their own country or a neighboring country? Where do you see an example of this both historically and today?
