Abstract

American settlers continued moving westward throughout the midto late-19th century. Native Americans were forced onto smaller and smaller reservations in order to free up more land for settlers to farm and exploit natural resources. President Grover Cleveland signed the Dawes Severalty Act in an attempt to assimilate Native Americans into mainstream American culture.
