Abstract

The American home front during World War II looked very similar to that of World War I. Large numbers of men left their jobs voluntarily or through the draft to serve in the U.S. military. Their absence provided new employment opportunities for women, African Americans, and other minority groups. As we saw in earlier readings, many African Americans had hoped that their service during World War I would improve their position in America, but this largely did not happen. African Americans still faced extreme discrimination throughout the country in all facets of life. They were excluded from many professions and denied access to better paying jobs.
