Abstract

Although Barry Goldwater lost the 1964 election by a landslide to incumbent President Lyndon B. Johnson, many of the ideas that Goldwater promoted gained traction in the years that followed. Republicans worked on resning their messaging, and by the late 1960s they had crafted a platform that appealed to many Americans, especially white working- and middle-class Americans.
