Abstract

Marcus Garvey was a Jamaican civil rights activist. He promoted an idea called Pan-Africanism. This means he wanted all people of African descent from around the world (called the African diaspora) to celebrate their African heritage and to create a thriving black world community. He founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in Jamaica, and the organization quickly spread throughout the Caribbean and Central America, with chapters in countries like Cuba, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras, to note a few.
