Abstract

Homer Plessy was a Louisiana resident of “mixed descent.” He selfidenti sed as African American. According to the court case, his lineage was “seven-eighths Caucasian and one-eighth African blood.” He purchased a srst class ticket for a train on June 7, 1892. When he entered the car and took his seat, he identised himself as African American.
