Abstract

Stokely Carmichael (also known as Kwame Ture) was a Trinidadian- American black civil rights activist who became a key leader among the movement’s younger generation. Carmichael joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC, pronounced “snick”), a group founded by long-time activist Ella Baker. For a while, SNCC worked with Martin Luther King Jr. and his organization, the SCLC, to organize nonviolent protests and marches. As time progressed, however, Carmichael and other young people grew frustrated with the slow pace of change.
