Abstract

Republican Donald J. Trump won the 2016 presidential election against Democrat Hillary Clinton. Trump carried rural America and won the support of blue-collar workers throughout the nation, including miners and other factor workers, both current and former. Even though Trump himself was a wealthy man, he spoke to voters’ frustrations about income inequality and declining job and economic opportunities and their fears about national security. He promised to bring back mining and manufacturing jobs, restrict immigration, and shore up the nation’s borders. Trump promoted a populist ideology, one that advocated getting rid of career politicians and bureaucrats in order to give voice to Americans who felt their interests had been overlooked by mainstream politicians.
