Abstract

President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, served two terms as president between Republican presidents George H.W. Bush and Bush’s son, George W. Bush. Clinton won the 1992 election handily in the Electoral College, but the popular vote was much closer, in part because an independent candidate named Ross Perot further split the electorate. As a result, Clinton often embraced more conservative positions and policies than some liberal Democrats would have preferred. This was particularly true following the 1994 midterm elections.
