Abstract

America thrived economically in the latter half of the twentieth century, thanks in large part to its emergence as a world power after World War II. Consumerism boomed and legislation like the GI Bill helped many Americans move into the middle class. In industrial cities throughout the Northeast and Midwest, though, economies were beginning to change in profound ways.
