Abstract

Ronald Reagan began his political career as a spokesman for Barry Goldwater’s campaign in 1964. This experience propelled Reagan to the forefront of California’s Republican Party, and in 1966 he ran for governor and won. Reagan served as governor of California from 1967 to 1975. He challenged incumbent President Gerald Ford in the 1976 Republican primary and lost. President Ford lost the 1976 election to Democrat Jimmy Carter, largely because Americans were disgusted with the Nixon-Ford Administration following the Watergate scandal and Nixon’s resignation. President Carter, however, only served one term. He failed to be reelected due to a struggling economy, a massive energy (oil-gasoline) shortage, and the Iran Hostage Crisis. Reagan ran for president in 1980 and won the electoral college by a landslide. The popular vote was closer, but Reagan still carried it by a wide margin.
