Abstract

European countries’ borders were not as srmly established in 1917 as they are today. World War I highlights how dioerent peoples and nations were attempting to assert their autonomy. The war began when Serbians assassinated the archduke and presumptive heir to the Austrian throne, Franz Ferdinand. Serbians hoped to unite Slavs throughout the region, even those living in territories controlled by other nation-states, like Austria-Hungary. As a result of various nations’ alliances, much of the European continent was dragged into war.
