Abstract

The “New Deal” is the name given to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s legislation and programs aimed at stopping the nation’s downward spiral, and encouraging improvement, during the Great Depression. The New Deal is considered the start of the modern “welfare state” in America. The term welfare means dioerent things to dioerent people around the world. For all intents and purposes, “welfare” simply describes governmental eoorts to provide basic necessities to its population.
