Abstract
A polis, or a city-state, can be described as a political formation comprising a central city and its adjacent territory (usually of a modest size), which are formally united by a central administrative structure. The first city-states appeared in ancient Mesopotamia as early as the beginnings of the Bronze Age but arguably reached their highest point of development in the context of the Greek civilization.
