Abstract

In the late summer of 476, the Ostrogothic war leader Odoacer used what was left of the Roman army in the west to force the last Roman-born emperor of the Western Empire, Romulus Augustulus, to abdicate. The takeover of the Western world by a Romanized Germanic barbarian is a useful event to mark the end of the ancient world and the beginning of the medieval period.
