Abstract

Between 750 and 500 BCE—after the end of the Dark Age but before the beginning of the Classical Period—Greece entered the Archaic Period, a time of recovery and development characterized by changes in politics, society, economy, and culture. Writing reemerged (when Mycenaean Linear B was replaced by an alphabetic system by Greek traders who adapted the Phoenician alphabet to their own language), government evolved from a monarchical system to one dominated by an aristocracy, and culture grew to include the development of philosophy and the creation of drama.
