Abstract

By the beginning of the eleventh century, the Western church was in need of significant reform. One of the biggest issues for the church and its monasteries was the increasing role they played in worldly interests. The church and its bishops were growing in power and prestige, while the monasteries were finding that along with the land granted to them came more and more wealth and privilege.
