Abstract

Medieval Europe interacted with a variety of other civilizations, including the pagans of the Baltic, notably the kingdom of Lithuania; the Eastern Christians of the Byzantine Empire, the Balkans, and Russia; the Muslims in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Spain; and the Mongols. Generally, Latin Christians believed that their society was superior in its adherence to the true religion and its greater cultivation, although they were aware that some other societies were superior in such areas as wealth and military power.
