Abstract

Christianity as a distinct religious sect originated in Judea during the second half of the first century CE and gradually penetrated the most distant regions of the Greco-Roman world. The eventual success of this new religion was largely predetermined by the nature of the message that was intrinsic to the Christian worldview from the start—the message of the imminent demise of the present world order and the urgent need for the salvation of one’s soul.
