Abstract
The Merovingian dynasty (mid-fifth century to 751) of Frankish kings began to weaken in the eighth century as the Mayors of the Palace (managers of the household of the Frankish kings) increasingly rose in power. One such mayor was Charles Martel (ca. 688–741), virtual ruler of Francia after 718.
