Abstract

Caesaropapism recognizes no separation of church and state. The opposite of theocracy, Caesaropapism asserts the position of the political ruler over the church. It describes the practice of the Byzantine emperors as they ruled over councils and appointed patriarchs. Such saints as John Chrysostom, patriarch of Constantinople, vigorously opposed imperial control over the church.
