Abstract

Charles the Great, or Charlemagne, was born around 742 CE to Pepin the Short, king of the Franks. Along with his younger brother, Carloman, Charlemagne ascended to the throne of the Frankish kingdom in 768 CE. This joint kingship was in accordance with Frankish tradition, which dictated that lands (including the land controlled by the king) be divided between male heirs rather than passing as a whole to one particular heir.
