Abstract

The Renaissance is often associated with “individualism.” Although certain individuals, notably the saints, stand out in the Middle Ages, there was often more concern with how well people filled their roles in society than their individual qualities. Portraits often presented idealized versions rather than attempting to capture the likeness of their subjects, and historians showed little interest in delving into individual character.
