Abstract

By the second half of the first millennium CE, the Christian church had become well established throughout both eastern and western Europe. As the institution grew, so did its resources and its temporal power. From the eighth century onward, popes occasionally claimed temporal authority over secular rulers. In 754, for instance, Charlemagne’s father, Pepin, was anointed king of the Franks by Pope Stephen II.
