Abstract

The Holy Land is a region of the world sacred to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Islamic forces captured Jerusalem in 637 but lost control in 1099 when Christian forces took the city during the First Crusade. As the homeland of Jesus Christ, the Holy Land was a popular Christian pilgrimage site, and the Crusades themselves were part military venture and part religious quest. For Muslims, Jerusalem is sacred as the place where Muhammad was taken up into Heaven.
