Abstract

A monastery is a complex of buildings where monks or nuns live in community under a superior and according to their vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience. The Benedictine monasteries were and still are self-governing. They were attractive to those interested in a humane way of life devoted to Christ and provided the institutional basis for the conversion of Europe to Christianity.
