Abstract
In the late spring of 793 CE, a group of longboats (seagoing vessels that were also designed for shallow waters, which allowed for river travel and beach landings) appeared off the island of Lindisfarne on the northeastern coast of England. The island was the site of a monastery founded there about 150 years earlier by Saint Aidan of Iona.
