Abstract

During the decline of the Western Roman Empire, numerous Germanic groups established kingdoms in western Europe, which would take the place of the empire in providing a political and legal framework. In general, these are known as the barbarian kingdoms, the connotation being that non-Romans were culturally and politically inferior. The age of the barbarian kingdoms would, in time, give way to the medieval age.
