Abstract

The high medieval period was marked by the creation of new institutions, many of which would last to the present day. The burgeoning wealth and increasing complexity of society multiplied the needs institutions had to fill. The simple society of peasant, noble, and cleric, which had developed in the early Middle Ages, was challenged by the rise of cities, the growth of the money economy, and new centralized bureaucratic institutions.
