Although the early-modern period is generally identified as the Age of Exploration in European history, its roots lay in late-medieval exploration. The Mongol Peace of the thirteenth century had increased European knowledge of Eurasia, as traders and missionaries made their way to the Mongol court and become acquainted with eastern Asia as well as the Middle East, central Asia, and India.
