Abstract
In the course of the eleventh century, a conflict emerged over the ideal role of the Roman Catholic Church in medieval society. The church at the beginning of the century was rife with conflict. Some clerical offices—sometimes including the office of the pope itself—were held by different families as if they were personal possessions.
