Abstract

History: The systematic study of the past was born in the Western world with Herodotus and Thucydides. Herodotus (ca. 484–ca. 425) wrote The Histories on the origins of the Greco-Persian conflict, and Thucydides (ca. 460–ca. 395) wrote The History of the Peloponnesian War. These men were not satisfied with hearsay; they examined evidence and causation in order to construct their narratives.
