Abstract
Whether one refers to him as Charles the Great, Karl der Grosse, or Charlemagne, this king of the Franks transformed the face of Europe in the eighth and ninth centuries. What we may consider the “age” of Charlemagne comprised a time before his accession to the throne and, indeed, before his birth. It culminated in his crowning as Holy Roman emperor by Pope Leo III in 800 CE.
