Abstract

As the soldiers and merchants of the Roman Empire expanded into the northern and western parts of Europe, the empire established the province of Gaul and subjugated the Celtic peoples who lived there. When, under Augustus in the early years of the first century CE, the Romans attempted to move east across the Rhine and Danube Rivers, they found their way blocked (and their legions destroyed) by a collection of warrior tribes collectively known as the Germans.
