Abstract

Republic: The roots of the word republic are res (things) and publica (public), so republic means “public things” or “a public affair”; it is not a private affair of a king. Thus citizenship took on central importance in a government of elected officials (such as consuls, praetors, questors, and censors) based on division of powers and checks and balances.
