Abstract

Beginning in 1347, Europe was struck by a great plague. It was not the only area affected—the plague seems to have originated in East Asia and traveled westward, striking the Middle East as well as Europe, possibly facilitated by the greater ease of travel across Asia promoted by the Mongol Empire. The plague first arrived in Italy, probably from the Black Sea region, and then spread along trade routes.
