Abstract

As Alexander the Great lay dying in the great palace of Nebuchadnezzar II in Babylon, the future of the empire he had constructed over the previous thirteen years was in great doubt. Shortly before he died, the world’s most successful general dropped his signet ring into the hands of his senior general, Perdiccas, indicating that he should take charge of the government. Perdiccas did his best.
